Buying an Fj Cruiser, thoughts?
« on: January 07, 2017, 06:33:20 PM »

Hi,

I am interested in buying a 2007 FJ with 112k.

I am wondering if any of you have one any anything to look after when buying?

I read that they use a timing chain vs belt, so that's good. I am hoping to tow a small camping trailer or boat in the future as well.

Don't do it...  The visibility out of them sucks.  Spend the money on a similar 4Runner.  Call me if you want me to look at it or if you have any other questions.

I test drove one today. I loved it man. I think a bigger rear view and a backup camera would definitely improve the visibility. I like that it comes with lockers, and the one I like has a roof rack.

I mainly need it to go fishing, and camping.

4runners seem to be more expensive, especially for 4x4 and no lockers or roof rack.

Most people who wheel say they're junk.

Sounds like Jesse wants something bigger than a 4Runner. What are your guys thoughts from that prospective?

The FJCruiser is much smaller than a 4Runner.

Is this why no one in the club has a new FJ? lol. Well, I guess we'll just have to put it to the test. Has anyone even test driven one besides myself?

Overall, a similar 2008 4runner has more interior space and a 24gal gas tank versus FJ 19. FJ has more head room and leg room for the driver and a slightly better ground clerance.

For the bang for my buck, the 2008 FJ I am buying has diff lockers, all terrain tires, 400W AC 115V and a sub woofer. This one has 86K mi and brand new tires. Best of all, the wife loves it and the color (Silver).

Finding a similar 4runner (if you can even find one that's 4x4) for the mileage and price (Under $20K) is extremely hard.

You gotta see it this way, at least I am not buying a Jeep  ;)

Oh btw, I found a better deal versus the original FJ I had posted. This one is 2008 with less miles and cheaper with more options.

I dont like dealing with used car dealers but here is one I would buy before I bought a FJ.

https://fresno.craigslist.org/ctd/5947486954.html

Or this one with a V8

https://fresno.craigslist.org/ctd/5927265043.html

You may try looking at a real Land Cruiser like the 100 series (LX470 Lexus) with the V8.  you would be looking at 98 through 07

One in Clovis

https://fresno.craigslist.org/cto/5942767405.html

Or one with less mileage in Sacramento

I have never liked the FJ from the first one that came into the dealer when they first came out.  You need to do what works for you.  There is a huge following and lots of aftermarket support for them.

A lot of real Land Cruiser people don't like them, but it was a pretty good move for Toyota to make them for awhile.  If nothing else, it gave them a lower-cost platform to bring in some new off-road tech which is now used on Tacoma & 4Runner.  The ones I've wheeled with do alright, too.

Before the FJ Cruiser came out, no one said of their Land Cruiser, "It's not an FJ".  Now many of them don't want to be connected...kind of too bad.

Toyota has announced they're discontinuing the FJ Cruiser: http://www.toyota.com/fjcruiser. I don't know whether this will make them desirable or dinosaurs.

Looks like you got something you like and it has lockers, that's a step ahead of some of us. Like you said, at least it's not a Jeep!  ;D

In all seriousness, it will be awesome to see you out on the trail again!

I had 2 FJCruisers on a Moab, UT run and they are tough rigs. The suspension didn't flex well at all, but they bounced through everything (with minimal damage?). If you want it for fishing and camping, it would probably be fine/great, unless you wanted to fish at Red Lake. It could still do it, but it would be work. My 2 cents....

I hope you noticed that everyone drives what they want. If you like it drive it. Dont worry about what anyone says, because  in the end they will all support and help. We all like to see the variety of rigs on the trail and no one is left behind. You could just suprise people and do really well.
